From Satisfaction to Life Skills: Mapping Course Evaluation onto the EU LifeComp Framework
DigComp, EntreComp and GreenComp gave Europe frameworks for digital, entrepreneurial and sustainability competence. LifeComp covers the personal, social and learning-to-learn skills employers say matter most — and your evaluation ignores. Here is how to map it.

Bottom line up front: Ask an employer what a graduate lacks and you rarely hear "subject knowledge." You hear self-regulation under pressure, communication, collaboration, adaptability, and the ability to keep learning. The European Commission gave these a formal name and structure in 2020: LifeComp, the European Framework for Personal, Social and Learning to Learn Key Competence. It sits alongside DigComp, EntreComp and GreenComp as part of the EU's competence-framework family — yet almost no course evaluation measures anything it describes. This essay maps LifeComp's nine competences onto what a course evaluation could actually ask, argues carefully for what such evaluation can and cannot claim, and shows how a conversational instrument captures developmental evidence a Likert grid structurally cannot.
The framework: what LifeComp is
LifeComp was published by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre — Sala, Punie, Garkov and Cabrera Giráldez, LifeComp: The European Framework for Personal, Social and Learning to Learn Key Competence (EUR 30246 EN, Publications Office of the European Union, 2020). It operationalises three of the eight key competences for lifelong learning set out in the 2018 Council Recommendation, and it is deliberately transversal: these are competences for all spheres of life, developable through formal, non-formal and informal education, not tied to any single subject.
The model is clean — three areas, nine competences, each with three descriptors:
- Personal — Self-regulation (P1), Flexibility (P2), Wellbeing (P3)
- Social — Empathy (S1), Communication (S2), Collaboration (S3)
- Learning to learn — Growth mindset (L1), Critical thinking (L2), Managing learning (L3)
Read that list against a standard end-of-module survey and the gap is glaring. Institutions increasingly claim to develop exactly these attributes — every graduate-attribute statement in Europe promises resilience, collaboration and lifelong learning — while evaluating none of them, asking instead whether the lecturer was "well-organised" and the materials "clear." This is the same satisfaction-to-skills gap we have mapped for other EU frameworks: ESCO, DigComp, EntreComp and GreenComp. LifeComp completes the set — and arguably covers the competences employers cite most.
Mapping the nine competences to evaluation questions
The point of a mapping is not to bolt nine new Likert items onto an already-bloated form. It is to ask better questions where they belong, and to recognise that most LifeComp competences are far better surfaced through conversation and specific behavioural prompts than through a "rate 1–5" scale.
Personal area. Self-regulation (managing emotions, impulses, and effort toward goals) shows up in how a course structured deadlines, autonomy and workload; a useful prompt is behavioural — "Describe a point in this module where you had to manage your own time or motivation. What helped or got in the way?" Flexibility (adapting to change and uncertainty) is developed by courses that require students to revise approaches or handle ambiguity — evaluable by asking how the module handled changing requirements or open-ended problems. Wellbeing is the most sensitive: LifeComp frames it as awareness of, and care for, one's physical, mental and social health, which connects course design to the belonging and workload questions we treat in What Course Evaluations Miss: Measuring Belonging, Not Just Satisfaction. It must be handled with care — a badly asked wellbeing item can feel intrusive or trip safeguarding duties — but ignoring workload sustainability entirely is its own failure.
Social area. Empathy, Communication and Collaboration are where course structure has the most direct developmental leverage, particularly in group work, peer feedback, studio and clinical settings. A course with substantial teamwork develops collaboration whether or not it evaluates it; asking students to reflect on how the course helped them give and receive feedback, or work with people who think differently, turns an invisible outcome into evidence. Crucially, this is formative intelligence: if collaboration was assigned but never scaffolded, students will say so.
Learning-to-learn area. This area maps most naturally onto higher education's own stated purpose. Growth mindset (belief that abilities can develop) is influenced by how a course frames failure and feedback. Critical thinking is the competence most disciplines claim to teach and least often evaluate directly. Managing learning (planning, monitoring and reflecting on one's own learning) is metacognition — and asking students whether a course actually helped them learn how to learn is a more revealing question than whether they were satisfied.
But isn't this just satisfaction with extra steps — and self-report all the way down?
The strongest objection is important and I want to meet it head-on. Critics argue that asking students to rate their own empathy, resilience or critical thinking simply relabels self-reported satisfaction as competence measurement — and self-assessment of exactly these traits is notoriously unreliable. They are right on both counts, and a responsible platform must not overclaim.
First, the self-assessment problem is real: people are weak judges of their own competence, and the least skilled are often the least accurate — the Dunning-Kruger dynamic we examine in Can Students Tell You How Much They Learned?. A student rating "my critical thinking: 4/5" is producing a perception, not a measurement of critical thinking.
So be precise about the claim. Course evaluation mapped to LifeComp does not measure whether a student has a competence — that requires assessment (rubrics, portfolios, performance tasks), which is the direct measurement discussed in Direct vs Indirect Measures. What LifeComp-mapped evaluation can legitimately measure is developmental opportunity and experience: did the course create genuine occasions to practise collaboration, wrestle with ambiguity, or reflect on learning — and how did students experience those occasions? "Did this module give you meaningful opportunities to work through disagreement in a team?" is answerable and useful; "rate your empathy" is not. That reframing — from possession of a competence to provision of the conditions that build it — is what keeps the exercise honest.
Second, the objection is also a design instruction: because these competences resist single-number self-rating, they demand qualitative, probing, behaviourally-anchored evidence rather than a Likert item — which is precisely where the conversational format earns its place, and where it must be triangulated with actual assessment rather than trusted alone, per Triangulation in Teaching Evaluation.
Why this needs a conversational instrument
LifeComp competences are narrative by nature. You cannot capture "how a course developed your capacity to manage your own learning" in a 1–5 grid without destroying the very thing you are trying to see. This is where a static survey and an AI-native evaluation genuinely diverge.

The result is not a competence score — Koji does not certify that a graduate is resilient — but a far richer evidence base about whether a programme provides the conditions for LifeComp development, mapped to a framework accreditors, employers and the wider EU policy context already recognise. The takeaway
Europe named the competences that matter for life and work — personal, social, and learning-to-learn — and gave them a nine-part structure in LifeComp. Universities promise to develop them; almost no evaluation instrument asks about them. The way to close that gap is not nine more Likert items but a reframed question — from "do you have this competence?" (which self-report cannot answer) to "did this course give you real opportunities to develop it, and how did that feel?" (which it can) — captured through conversation, triangulated with genuine assessment, and reported against a framework the sector already trusts. Course evaluation cannot certify life skills. Done honestly, it can tell you whether your curriculum is even trying to build them.
