The One-Minute Paper: Formative Feedback That Also Improves Learning

The one-minute paper and the muddiest point are the best-known Classroom Assessment Techniques. What Chizmar & Ostrosky (1998) and Stead (2005) found about their effect on learning and feedback, and how to run continuous formative collection well.

The short answer

The one-minute paper is a Classroom Assessment Technique (CAT): at the end of a class, students spend a minute or two answering two questions — what was the most important thing you learned today? and what question remains uppermost in your mind? (the second is often run as the "muddiest point"). It is the opposite of the end-of-term survey: low-stakes, frequent, in-the-moment, and fast enough to change the next class rather than the next cohort. Unusually for a feedback tool, there is experimental evidence that using it actually raises learning — not merely that it collects opinions. It is one of the highest-leverage formative instruments a lecturer has, and it complements, rather than competes with, summative course evaluation.

Bottom line: The one-minute paper turns feedback into a weekly loop the current students benefit from. Chizmar & Ostrosky (1998) found it improved measured economic knowledge regardless of student ability or instructor; Stead (2005) confirmed generally positive but methodologically thin evidence. Run it frequently, act on it visibly, and use it alongside — not instead of — end-of-course evaluation.

What the research says

The technique was codified by Angelo & Cross (1993) in Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers, which catalogued fifty CATs designed to give teachers rapid, ungraded evidence of what students are actually learning while there is still time to respond. The one-minute paper and the "muddiest point" became the two best-known because they are almost free to run and immediately actionable. The pedagogical logic is twofold: the teacher learns what did not land, and — because writing a brief summary and surfacing a question is itself retrieval practice and metacognition — the student consolidates learning in the act of responding.

The strongest empirical support is Chizmar & Ostrosky (1998), The one-minute paper: some empirical findings (Journal of Economic Education, 29(1), 3–10). In a controlled comparison in introductory economics, they found that using the one-minute paper increased economic knowledge — measured by gain scores on a standardised test — and, importantly, that the benefit held regardless of student ability level and regardless of instructor characteristics. This is a stronger claim than most feedback research can make: it is evidence that the technique itself, not just a generally attentive teacher, moved an objective learning outcome. Almer, Jones & Moeckel (1998) reported compatible results in accounting, with one-minute-paper use associated with better exam performance.

Stead (2005), A review of the one-minute paper (Active Learning in Higher Education, 6(2), 118–131), synthesised the field and reached a measured conclusion: the evidence is generally positive but relatively thin and uneven, mixing a handful of empirical studies with a larger body of practitioner testimony. Stead cautioned that reported benefits are often confounded with enthusiastic adoption, that effects on learning are harder to establish than effects on engagement, and that the technique can lose value if it becomes a rote ritual. The review''s value is precisely its restraint: it takes the tool seriously while refusing to overclaim.

The convergent reading across these sources is that the one-minute paper is a well-founded formative instrument with at least one rigorous demonstration of an effect on learning, and a broader base of positive-but-softer evidence around engagement and feedback quality.

Why it matters for course evaluation in practice

Most institutional evaluation is summative and annual: the questionnaire arrives at the end, the results reach the lecturer weeks later, and the students who supplied the feedback have already left the course. That design cannot help the cohort that generated it. The one-minute paper inverts every one of those properties.

  • Timeliness. A muddiest-point collected on Tuesday can reshape Thursday''s class. This is the single biggest advantage over end-of-term SET, and it is why the mid-semester-feedback literature finds formative collection improves teaching more reliably than summative ratings alone.
  • Closing the loop is visible and fast. When a lecturer opens the next session by addressing the two most common confusions from last time, students see feedback used — the behaviour the "students doubt anyone listens" literature identifies as the key driver of future participation and trust.
  • Diagnosis, not just judgement. A 4.1 satisfaction mean tells you a course was liked; a term of muddiest-point data tells you which concepts consistently fail to land, week by week — a map of where the course needs redesign.
  • It measures a different thing. The one-minute paper captures session-level comprehension, not course-level design or instructor performance. That makes it a complement to summative evaluation, filling exactly the gap the annual survey cannot reach.

For a quality-assurance office, a programme where lecturers run continuous formative CATs and document the changes they prompt is itself strong evidence of a functioning quality culture — the kind of loop-closing that accreditation frameworks increasingly want to see demonstrated rather than asserted.

Limitations and honest caveats

  • The causal evidence is narrow. Chizmar & Ostrosky is one well-designed study in one discipline. Stead (2005) is explicit that rigorous, replicated evidence of learning effects is limited, and that much of the enthusiasm is practitioner testimony. Do not present the one-minute paper as a proven universal booster of achievement.
  • Confounding with good teaching. Teachers who adopt CATs tend to be reflective and responsive anyway. Separating the technique''s effect from the effect of the kind of teacher who uses it is genuinely hard.
  • Response quality decays. Run every session without visibly acting on it, and students satisfice — one-word answers, blank "muddiest points." The tool''s value depends on the loop being closed.
  • It is not anonymous by default, and in a small class handwritten responses can be identifiable. Low stakes usually protects candour, but sensitive feedback needs a genuinely anonymous channel.
  • Scope. It captures perceived comprehension of a single session. It says nothing about assessment fairness, workload across the term, or course design — all of which still require other instruments.

Running it well: a short protocol

The evidence only pays off if the technique is run deliberately rather than as a box-ticking ritual. A defensible protocol has six parts. Ask two questions, not ten — the most-important-learning prompt and the muddiest-point prompt are enough; adding items destroys the "one minute" that makes students actually do it. Run it at the end of the session, when the material is fresh, and give a genuine ninety seconds rather than a rushed ten. Read for pattern, not for individuals — the value is in the two or three confusions that recur across the cohort, not in any single response. Close the loop out loud: open the next session by naming the top muddiest points and addressing them, so students see their minute was not wasted. Vary the prompt occasionally — a "what surprised you?" or "where did you get stuck in the reading?" keeps responses from going stale. And keep it low-stakes and separate from grading, so candour survives; the moment students suspect the muddiest point counts against them, they stop reporting real confusion. Institutions that want to evidence this for quality review should log the loop — the confusion identified, the response given, and any change in the next cohort''s comprehension — because a documented formative loop is precisely the demonstration of a working quality culture that reviewers ask for.
