Does Your Course Support Autonomy, Competence, and Relatedness? Self-Determination Theory as an Evaluation Lens

Self-Determination Theory says motivation depends on three basic needs — autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Here is how to evaluate a course by whether it feeds or starves those needs, instead of only whether students were satisfied.

The short answer

Whether students stay motivated in a course is not a matter of luck or charisma — it is largely a function of three psychological needs the course either supports or frustrates: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Self-Determination Theory (SDT), developed by Richard Ryan and Edward Deci, gives course evaluation a mechanism-level question that "How satisfied were you?" cannot: did this course give you real choices, make you feel capable, and connect you to others? Evaluating against those three needs tells a programme team not just that motivation dropped, but which lever to pull to raise it.

What the research says

Ryan and Deci's 2000 paper in American Psychologist ("Self-determination theory and the facilitation of intrinsic motivation, social development, and well-being") set out the framework that has since generated thousands of studies. SDT's central claim is that humans have three innate, universal psychological needs, and that contexts which satisfy them produce autonomous motivation (doing something because it is interesting or personally valued), while contexts which thwart them produce controlled motivation (doing something to gain a reward or avoid punishment) or outright amotivation:

  • Autonomy — the need to experience one's behaviour as self-endorsed and volitional, not coerced. In a course, autonomy support looks like meaningful choice, a rationale for requirements, and acknowledgement of students' perspectives.
  • Competence — the need to feel effective and to master optimally challenging tasks. Competence support looks like clear structure, actionable feedback, and challenge calibrated to the student's current level.
  • Relatedness — the need to feel connected to and respected by others. Relatedness support looks like an instructor who conveys care and a cohort in which students belong.

The educational application was spelled out early. Deci, Vallerand, Pelletier and Ryan's 1991 paper in Educational Psychologist ("Motivation and education: the self-determination perspective") argued that when SDT is applied to schooling it is "concerned primarily with promoting in students an interest in learning, a valuing of education, and a confidence in their own capacities," and that these autonomous forms of motivation predict higher-quality learning, deeper conceptual understanding, and better adjustment than controlled motivation does. Ryan and Deci's 2020 update in Contemporary Educational Psychology reviewed two further decades of evidence and reaffirmed that both intrinsic motivation and well-internalised extrinsic motivation "predict an array of positive outcomes across varied educational levels and cultural contexts and are enhanced by supports for students' basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness."

The crucial distinction for evaluation is between amount and type of motivation. A course can generate high effort through fear of a high-stakes exam — controlled motivation — and still corrode students' interest, persistence, and wellbeing. SDT predicts that such a course may show acceptable short-term performance and even acceptable satisfaction while quietly undermining the autonomous motivation that sustains lifelong learning. A satisfaction survey cannot see this; an SDT-framed evaluation can.

Why it matters for course evaluation in practice

Standard course evaluations measure reaction (satisfaction) and, less well, self-reported learning. SDT adds a diagnostic layer that is directly tied to what teachers can change. If a cohort reports low autonomy, the remedy is design-level: offer genuine choice in topics or assessment format, explain the "why" behind requirements, reduce controlling language. If they report low competence, the remedy is structural: clearer scaffolding, earlier low-stakes feedback, better-calibrated difficulty. If they report low relatedness, the remedy is relational: more interaction, visible instructor care, cohort-building. Each need maps to a distinct, evidence-based intervention.

This is why an SDT lens is more actionable than a global "engagement" score. "Engagement was low" is a symptom; "students felt no ownership of the assessment and the feedback came too late to feel competent" is a diagnosis. SDT also reframes an uncomfortable finding the validity literature keeps producing — that the courses which drive the deepest learning are sometimes rated lower. SDT explains the mechanism: an autonomy-supportive, optimally challenging course can feel effortful in the moment even as it builds durable autonomous motivation. Measuring the three needs directly lets you tell a need-thwarting hard course (bad) apart from a need-supporting hard course (good) — a distinction a single difficulty rating erases.

Limitations and honest caveats

Self-report of psychological needs is still self-report. Asking students whether they felt autonomous inherits every bias that afflicts satisfaction items — halo effects, mood, acquiescence. Need-satisfaction ratings correlate with liking the instructor, so a warm, likeable teacher may score high on relatedness partly through a halo rather than genuine belonging. Validated instruments (for example, the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction scales and learning-climate questionnaires) help, but they do not fully break the correlation.

Universality is contested at the margins. SDT claims the three needs are universal, and cross-cultural evidence broadly supports this, but the expression and relative weighting of autonomy in particular vary across cultures. Autonomy in SDT means volition and self-endorsement, not independence or individualism — a distinction that is easy to lose in translation and in questionnaire wording. Cross-cultural evaluation must guard against interpreting "autonomy" as a Western individualist construct.

Need support is necessary, not sufficient. A course can be warm, structured, and autonomy-supportive while teaching the wrong content or aiming at trivial outcomes. SDT tells you about the motivational climate, not the intellectual worth of the curriculum; it complements, but does not replace, alignment- and outcome-focused evaluation.

Correlation, not clean causation, in field settings. Much of the classroom SDT evidence is correlational. Experimental autonomy-support interventions exist and generally support the causal story, but in any single course evaluation you are observing associations, and confounds (prior interest, ability, discipline norms) are always in play.

  • Automatic thematic analysis groups need-thwarting experiences ("no choice in the project", "feedback came after it was too late to improve") into named themes with prevalence, and bias-aware reporting flags where a relatedness score may be riding on an instructor-liking halo.
  • Formative, mid-cycle collection lets a team detect a competence or autonomy problem while the course is still running — when supporting the need can still change the outcome — rather than in a post-mortem.
  • Closing-the-loop action tracking ties each identified need deficit to the intervention chosen and tests, next cycle, whether the need-support improved.
