EUR-ACE® is the pan-European quality label for accredited engineering degree programmes, administered by the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE) and awarded through authorised national agencies (for example ASIIN in Germany, the Engineering Council/IET in the UK, CTI in France, QUACING in Italy, and FINEEC in Finland). For engineering faculties, EUR-ACE sits alongside national institutional accreditation as a discipline-specific mark of quality. This guide explains exactly how student course-evaluation data becomes credible EUR-ACE evidence — and, honestly, where it does not.
Answer first: EUR-ACE is built on three pillars — Student Workload (ECTS), Programme Outcomes, and Programme Management. Course evaluation evidence belongs mainly under Programme Management, which requires programmes to collect and analyse feedback from students and stakeholders, conduct regular periodic review, and demonstrate systematic continuous improvement. Course evaluation does not, by itself, prove that students attained the programme outcomes — that requires outcome-based assessment evidence. Used correctly, course evaluation is the engine of your continuous-improvement narrative; used incorrectly (as a proxy for outcome attainment), it weakens your case.
How EUR-ACE is structured
The EUR-ACE Framework Standards and Guidelines (EAFSG, Edition 4, 2021) describe an accredited programme in three parts:
- Student Workload — expressed in ECTS credits, ensuring the programme is appropriately sized.
- Programme Outcomes — the competences a graduate must demonstrate, organised into eight areas: knowledge and understanding; engineering analysis; engineering design; investigations; engineering practice; making judgements; communication and team-working; and lifelong learning. These are the "minimum threshold" the engineering community expects.
- Programme Management — the governance and quality-assurance system that runs, monitors, and improves the programme.
The accreditation focus is on whether the programme, taken as a whole, is organised, implemented and developed so that students actually attain the programme outcomes. Course evaluation is one input into the Programme Management system that keeps that engine running.
What Programme Management asks for
Under Programme Management, EUR-ACE expects a programme to operate a closed quality loop. In practical terms, reviewers look for evidence that the programme:
- systematically collects and analyses feedback from students and other stakeholders (employers, alumni, staff);
- conducts regular periodic review of the programme;
- uses that feedback to make documented improvements to curriculum, delivery, and outcomes;
- and can show the effect of changes over time.
This mirrors the wider European Standards and Guidelines (ESG 2015) ethos of student-centred, continuously improving programmes. If you already maintain ESG-aligned accreditation evidence, your EUR-ACE Programme Management evidence will draw on the same foundations.
Requirement-to-output mapping

The point of the mapping is not that a tool "does accreditation for you" — no tool does. It is that the management standard rewards a systematic, documented, closed loop, and an interview-based system makes that loop both richer and easier to evidence than a stack of static Likert PDFs.
What course evaluation can and cannot prove (be precise)
EUR-ACE assessors are engineers and academics; vague claims hurt you. State the boundary clearly:
- Course evaluation evidences the Programme Management standard — that you listen, analyse, review periodically, and improve. It is strong, direct evidence here.
- Course evaluation does not evidence Programme Outcome attainment. Whether a graduate can "design solutions to complex engineering problems" is shown by outcome-based assessment — capstone projects, examinations, design portfolios, rubrics — not by how students rated a module. Conflating the two is a common and avoidable weakness in self-assessment reports.
- Numeric satisfaction scores alone are weak evidence. They show sentiment, not learning, and are vulnerable to well-documented biases in student evaluations and ceiling effects. Qualitative, triangulated evidence with a visible action trail is far more persuasive to a peer-review panel.
Position course evaluation as the continuous-improvement instrument that complements outcome assessment, and your EUR-ACE narrative becomes coherent rather than over-claimed.
Building an EUR-ACE-ready evidence trail: a checklist
- Run evaluation every teaching period with a standardised instrument, so periodic review has consistent data to draw on.
- Collect explanatory qualitative evidence, not only ratings — assessors want to see why students experienced a module as they did.
- Triangulate student voice with employer/alumni feedback and outcome-assessment data; never rely on a single source.
- Maintain an action log that links each significant finding to a documented change and, later, to its measured effect. This is closing the loop.
- Report longitudinally across cohorts so trends and the impact of past changes are visible.
- Keep outcome evidence separate and explicit — map each of the eight EUR-ACE outcome areas to its assessment evidence, distinct from your evaluation data.
- Document GDPR handling — anonymity/confidentiality approach, data residency, and the DPA.
When a different approach may fit better
In the spirit of honest guidance: if your engineering faculty is small, runs few modules, and already has a well-functioning manual feedback-and-review process that assessors accept, adding new software may add little. Similarly, if your institution has standardised on a single survey platform (for example Explorance Blue or EvaSys) and your main gap is reporting rather than evidence depth, improving how you use that tool may be enough. What assessors actually ask during the visit
A EUR-ACE accreditation involves a self-assessment report followed by a peer-review site visit, during which the panel meets students, staff, and often alumni and employers. Under Programme Management, expect questions such as: How do you collect student feedback, and how often? Show us a change you made because of it. How did you know the change worked? How do students hear back about what you did? These are closing-the-loop questions, and they are answered far more convincingly with a documented action trail than with a folder of survey averages.
This is why the form of your evidence matters as much as its existence. A panel can read a longitudinal report showing that "assessment clarity" was a recurring theme in 2024, that the programme revised its rubrics and briefing for 2025, and that the 2025 cohort raised the theme far less — and that students were told about the change. That is a complete, defensible loop. A single year of Likert scores cannot tell that story, no matter how high the numbers are.
Supporting (not proving) the eight outcome areas
While course evaluation does not measure outcome attainment, well-designed qualitative feedback can flag where the delivery of an outcome area may be weak — which then directs your outcome-assessment attention. For example, if students consistently report that team projects were poorly coordinated, that is a signal worth checking against your communication and team-working outcome evidence; if they report that lab investigations felt rushed, check it against your investigations outcome assessment. Used this way, evaluation becomes an early-warning system that complements — never replaces — the assessment data that actually demonstrates attainment. Keeping that distinction crisp in your self-assessment report is one of the simplest ways to strengthen a EUR-ACE submission.
A note on national agencies and revisions
EUR-ACE is awarded through ENAEE-authorised national agencies, each of which layers its own procedures on top of the common framework, and frequently combines EUR-ACE with national accreditation in a single visit. Because the EAFSG is periodically revised (the current edition dates to 2021), always confirm the live standard and your specific agency''s submission templates before assembling evidence. The continuous-improvement expectation, however, has been stable across editions — building a genuine, documented feedback loop now will serve you regardless of future wording changes.
